Practicum

  • A practicum is an unpaid, either full-time or part-time position under the supervision of the employing organization.
  • Students in the role work between 8 to 16 weeks while working towards certified professional recognition (e.g. social work, healthcare, education).

Benefits of Practicum

Bringing a practicum student into your organization is a great way to create a talent pipeline of students who are working towards a certified professional recognition. These students are often fitting for roles in healthcare, social work, education, etc.

What an Practicum could look like:

Henry, a Child and Youth Care student, works with a non-profit agency supporting at risk youth. During his placement, Henry applies his education in trauma-informed practices to assist youth and their families through difficult times.

Henry also uses his education of government policy to help his clients access mental health aides. By having Henry on their team, the agency is able to provide more resources to their clients.

Program Example

SAIT’s Pharmacy Assistant practicum allows students to explore decision making, ethics, team dynamics, cultural awareness, interpersonal style and communication in the health-care setting. In addition, they will review laws and regulations related to the practice of pharmacy.
