Dear Employer,

You’re probably reading this wondering “why should I hire a student?” If your workload is as heavy as my teammates’, I would be willing to bet that you’re extremely busy and probably a little bit stressed. I’m sure that hiring a student is likely the last thing on your mind right now, but allow me to try to change your mind with five reasons why you should hire a student:

1. A student can offer support and lighten your workload.

Since you’re busy, I feel quite sure that there are projects that you would like to get done, but that keep getting pushed to the bottom of your to-do list. I’m here to tell you that these projects are perfect for a student to work on. For example, when I started with the TalentED YYC marketing and communications team, I was asked to audit our website and propose any required updates. Tasks like this, that are important but not necessarily urgent, make for great student projects!

Since your new student will be able to help you complete these tasks, get ready for a shrinking to-do list and a growing to-done list!

2. A student will bring new energy and enthusiasm to your team.

I can assure you that my primary objective in my work term is to gain as much experience as I can, and to simultaneously make a lasting impression on my employers. I think the same thing could be said for almost every student looking for work, and I think this is why students are so energetic with their work.

On top being enthusiastic, students are also extremely coachable, and willing to learn. This means that being exposed to new skills, platforms, and information is not a problem.

3. Students are tech-savvy and have access to all the innovative tools in your field.

Let’s be honest, new technological developments are constantly being implemented in your industry’s practice. Sometimes, it may be difficult or overwhelming to keep up with it all! Luckily, students can offer knowledge of these new systems, so your organization can implement technology that may have an immediate impact on your business! By bringing in student talent, your team can become comfortable and well-versed in the many emerging workplace tools.

This summer, I brought the idea of LinkedIn newsletters to our team. Though it is a relatively well-known LinkedIn feature, it was one that hadn’t been considered before. Working with my team, we were able to implement it alongside our e-newsletter. Now, we have an additional tool to use. To see my work in action, go subscribe to our newsletter!

If you need a sole reason to think “WOW! I should hire a student!” this one should be it!

4. A student will help to develop the skills of your current staff.

I look up to all of my team members, regardless of their age or experience. Even someone new has experience to share with me, and they have skills that I can learn from. Therefore, I see each of my co-workers as a mentor. Each of these individuals has had the opportunity to coach me. In turn, they are acting as a leader.

If you want to take your team to the next level by developing leadership skills, and instilling confidence in your staff, you should be thinking “I SHOULD hire a student!”.

5. There is no shortage of students who are ready to work.
